REVIEW
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Well this is a breath of fresh air on Kalos Minishorts and has some great ideas.
It is made by the two leads.
Miah Green has a dream role getting to play not 1 not 2 but 3 people. From kick ass mode on that motorbike to exhausted in the office it is a tour de force. There are the expected fun bits as she switches costume, but I think the exceptional bits of her performance are nearer the end, when you see the emotions, vulnerability, uncertainty and wariness. That's what got me, and is so good.
I only ever hear rave reviews about Gabe Armentano and you can see why. Charles is a tricky role, why on earth doesn't he work out that they are all the same person, and he is arrogant. To then make him likeable, credible and crucially someone you root for takes skill.
Also want to give a shout out to Jake Sciacca who works that white suit and necktie and in my head channels a wise sage dispensing life advice to Charles.
And one of the key strengths of this is we don't labour the cross dressing, Charles works it out at the right moment.
My quibbles possibly stem from the fact I have been incredibly tired this week. And I really struggled to get the reasoning behind the whole Nora/Naomi thing. I feel like I missed the exposition. I just didn't quite get it.
The chemistry took a bit too long to kick in, it is only really in the last 10 episodes that it came to life and ignited. Needed more episodes of this.
And a few ideas aren't quite finished, like the build up to the failed proposal which doesn't have the final pay off.
It's really close to being 5 star, and the performances and ambition are definitely worthy of that.
A good fun effort, and I definitely need to watch more of Miah Green and Gabe Armentano.
💖 Top swoonworthy moment:
There are some really lovely moments in this, and I think the best is when Nora/Naomi is drunk and tells Charles the truth. Is is perfectly done, vulnerable and beautifully delivered. That’s the moment that got me, and I love that it was delivered by the female lead. And so good at the end when Charles doesn’t force his suit, but instead accepts that she may not want him. Hallelujah.
🦹🏼♂️ Top villain award:
Refreshingly we don’t have the standard array of vertical villains. Arguably circumstances are the biggest villain as poor Nora/Naomi ends up working 2 jobs.
😂 Comedy gold:
Apart from all the great gender bender comedy, Charles’ presumption that all women will fall for him - to be able to pull this off and not make the character dislikeable is huge credit to Gabe Armentano.
🎺 Unsung hero:
Charles’ Assistant. Who barely gets to leave that office, or get a fresh change of clothes. Yes Jake Sciacca can pull off a white suit. But let the man wear something else! And despite having to live in the office is still good humoured and gives Charles sound advice.
