REVIEW

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Now this is very good on Goodshort and a really attempt to raise the vertical bar

- some creative and astounding camera work and effects especially in the first few episodes
- our villains are rounded out and have either back story or we know exactly who their character is
- Melanie isn't passive but fights back against the attacker, her husband and goes to 'save her man'
- we have a terrifying implied threat with the hot plate which has much more impact than on screen violence
- George has layers, everyone consistently underestimates him
- we see an actual relationship grow and develop on screen
- an excellent reverse of the swimming pool trope

It is made by the cast

Candace Mizga gets a role where she can kick ass as a hot shot lawyer, stand up for herself, have lighter moments with George, and silly moments like faking it with Marsh. So nice to see Candace get to do more than suffer beautifully, & have an interesting, rounded female character

Augustin De Beaumont is extraordinary - reminds me of the great Lucas Jade Zumann in Anne with an E as he has the most expressive eyes. He perfectly captures the impetuosness of youth but combines it with a steely undercurrent, & ability to switch into swoonworthy take charge mode. It is a compelling mix that is hard to resist

Daniel Bateman has so much fun as the utterly dreadful Patrick. Obnoxious & conceited he reveals a nasty streak whenever cornered, and has to spend a large part of the vertical in a neck brace. The scene where Melanie and Patrick finally have it out in front of all the staff is superb

Loved the actress who played Lynne, she has this amazing ability to look like she swallowed a wasp (help can't find name!)

This all hangs on the relationship between George and Melanie. It works at the beginning as fun seeing the guy pursue the girl for one. The backward fall into the pool is a good twist. And it works later when we see them as a couple, having fun together

But it gets a bit bogged down in the middle and we lose some pace. The whole ovary thing jarred horribly tone wise. And the camera work drops to normal post paywall (first time noticed a difference)

So good rather than great

💖 Top swoonworthy moment:

This just perfectly captures the reckless, impetuousness of youth, and how George brings Melanie back to life. And it is one of the most realistic declarations of ‘I love you’ when Melanie tells George for the first time.

🦹🏼‍♂️ Top villain award:

Lynn is really well written - she has been supporting her mother’s addictions for years, and clearing up the family messes. It is no wonder she feels she deserves the company, and even she is appalled by her mother at the end. So refreshing to see a well crafted villain with motive.

😂 Comedy gold:

There is a lot of unintenional comedy thanks to Patrick and his buffoon ways - from doing the sales pitch at a funeral to the whole ‘have a baby party’, and fact he wants a podcast.

Also the line ’Having you guide us is like using an atomic bomb to unclog a toilet. Overtill but deeply effective

🎺 Unsung hero:

Marsh who really goes above and beyond when Melanie uses him to get to George. And then gets his hand crushed for his efforts.
