REVIEW

⭐⭐⭐

Now this one is tricky. Because it has 3 of the most talented performers in Verticals as it's leads: Ashley Michelle Grant, Michael Vaccaro and Noah Fearnley.

It looks good, the images are really rich and everyone brings it with their performances. We don't have any really troubling storylines - no slaps or toxic misogyny. It's perfectly watchable.

But it doesn't soar.

And I think it is because Ashley, Michael and Noah have all outgrown this story.

The script is not the best. By leaning in so much to the enemy bickering, it makes both characters unlikeable. It needs a softness that is not there. The script doesn't give us a reason that Gavin and Victoria get together.

Compare to The Hating Game, in my mind the best rom com Hollywood have produced in the past 5 years. There is a softness and deftness to the script. The dislike is explained (misunderstanding). The bickering doesn't impact on company deals. And the focus is on falling in love.

Now Ashley, Michael and Noah are just as good performers as Lucy Hale and Austin Stowell.

They deserve better source material. They all work miracles with what they have here.

Now I feel I am being harsh, but the bar has gone up for verticals this year.

And I am getting really cross when you have supreme comedy talent like Ashley Michelle Grant, Michael Vaccaro and Noah Fearnley not being given scripts that match this.

These are stars who have turned in great performance after great performance after great performance in verticals that have varying quality of storyline and scripts.

They have done their time people. GIVE THEM THE GOOD STUFF.

Sit down with them, ask them what they want to do, write roles for them. You have 3 superstars here and you are not making the most of their talents.

Now I may be alone with this opinion which is why I have delayed posting it.

And this does not mean I no longer adore NF. I am still a Stan account.

I just want more for them.

💖 Top swoonworthy moment:

This is saved by the fact that Ashley Michelle Grant and Noah Fearnely have chemistry. Because the script doesn’t give them much to work with. The characters are pretty mean to each other for most of it. More time is needed showing them looking out for each other, and actually falling in love.

🦹🏼‍♂️ Top villain award:

I will actually say Gavin and Victoria - because if that was my company they would both be fired. Total unprofessionalism - when you have characters sabotaging each other at work you need to do it more subtly like in The Hating Game - not with stupid stunts that would get you immediately fired.

😂 Comedy gold:

I did love that there was a Mindfulness Room at the office. Um I think the staff needed to use it!

Also the scene where Gavin and Victoria are sitting back to back - that is perfection, and what we needed a lot more of.

🎺 Unsung hero:

Cornelius Hartley. I mean the man just wanted to retire. But instead has his blood pressure sent through the roof by Gavin & Victoria’s antics. They both owe him a retirement full of spa days, and relaxation.
