Demoted to the mailroom, Ellie never expected to fall for Colton, the mailboy. Turns out, he's a secret billionaire. Now, caught between her ruthless boss and a love she never expected, the stakes are higher than ever.
REVIEW
⭐⭐⭐
Ah. Well this wasn't the best Mark Vega vertical to start with. Why? Because on paper we have good things:
- great cast
- we have got rid of all toxicity and violence, thank you
- beautifully shot
BUT it totally falls flat because the script has forgotten the fundamental reason why we are here to watch verticals:
⭐ We want to see the journey of people falling in love, and then overcoming obstacles, whatever they are, to be together ⭐
I feel harsh writing this but it feels like a group think.
- Put in a dream scene with the couple making out so viewers get this before paywall
- Put in lots of steamy scenes because viewers like that
It feels condescending, an assumption that is all we want and are capable of consuming.
We are more intelligent than that. Trust us, we can handle more complex stories.
We never know why the leads fall in love.
What does Colton love about her?
Why does Ellie like Colton beyond he is hot?
Why is Colton working in the mailroom?
We know he is rebelling against his father but we never know why he is in the mailroom as opposed to working as a plumber, setting up his own company etc.
(Also that Mailroom is way too nice... surely it should be a dingy room in the basement?)
The problem is we aren't given a reason to root for the characters. You can't jump from a post note and sex to being in love. Give me a reason why.
The title here is taken from the song, and long running Hallmark series Signed, Sealed, Delivered. Now that was cheesy as heck, but it did deliver a new love story each time you could get invested in.
I really appreciate the attempts here, I can see the effort to make something a bit more elevated. But if actors as talented as Alyona Real and Mark Vega can't make me care about their characters, and I find myself more interested in the interiors, then there really is something missing in the script.
I want to see them getting a chance to act. To break our hearts and pull us in, we know Alyona & Mark can do this.
I find this review hard to write, I don't want to upset anyone. Hopefully articulating what I am looking for as a viewer will help writers.
💖 Top swoonworthy moment:
You get plenty of kissing scenes if that is what you are there for but we never see them fall in love. We just go from there is an attraction, walk round the office together, she writes an odd post it, have sex and suddenly they are both in love. We miss out the key part of a romance for me - the falling in love process, and that is a huge shame.
🦹🏼♂️ Top villain award:
We have the office shenanigans, and creepy boss Preston. It’s great that there are no slaps here, but it all felt a little flat. There was never a real sense of threat - always felt Colton would easily deal with it.
😂 Comedy gold:
There isn’t much, we have Colton’s messy declaration near the end and that is it. The tone is played straight.
🎺 Unsung hero:
Really liked Ellie’s relationship with her brother Max, and would have loved to see more of this banter.
Also the interiors - bit obsessed with the blue shelving in the mailroom, exposed bricks and the tree wallpaper in the bathroom.
