This is for anyone desperately looking for a new storyline in Vertical Dramas, one of the first releases from @knockout.shorts

Basically it is a mix of YA books The Selection & The Hunger Games, as our female lead has to battle other candidates to win the prince and become a royal bride

The stunts and fights are quite scrappy which I like, these girls aren't all highly seasoned warriors, but have a bit of training and put in desperate situations. And the results are deadly.

But we don't skimp on romance and intrigue either, with masks, possible switched identities, a very handsome footman, secret passageways, usurped royals and more. It's a pretty good attempt at world building, compressed into 50 episodes.

@bella.mraz is on a golden run at the moment, and this is another super role, where she is very much the hero (note I don't think we ever see the male lead do any stunts). Plus there is a fun banter with @liamclifton and they build the connection quickly between the two.

All the other candidates are given their moment and distinct personalities. Shout out to

@jessie_jk @invaderrvim @jordandeltaco @jadecoatsworth (who gets a spectacular death)

And @jamesrrise who does something Dastardly at the end

But the big bads are terrifying governess @bettinadevinacting and the cold, calculating king @keokitrask

It's a bit jaggedy here and there, the pace at the beginning is slower than we are used to in verts and there is an odd lack of emotion and monotone delivery in a key scene, but overall this is a really welcome attempt at doing something new, with a strong female lead and none of the endless abuse and name calling we are all sick of.

And a world has been built here. Plus the ending!!!!! You can't leave it there.

I really want to find out what happens next, we need a sequel. Possibly visit to some of the counties...basically more please.

💖 Top swoonworthy moment:

I can’t say who Liam Clifton plays, but he brings the swoon, and has an affectionate, teasing relationship with Elara who is very much the main character, and comes through at the end when he needs to.

🦹🏼‍♂️ Top villain award:

I could choose the system itself, or the King (who has clearly got a lot of skeletons in that closet). But it has to be the governess, the grim overseer of all the trials, and perhaps the scariest woman in black since the ghost in the book / play The Woman in Black.

😂 Comedy gold:

No real comedy here - instead shout out to whoever did the effects for the death by poisoning. Best on screen death by this method since Joffrey in Game of Thrones.

🎺 Unsung hero:

Clementine - because like Elara we are never quite sure that we can trust her, and she does an awesome job of explaining the county and society she comes from. More Clementine please in the sequel.
