REVIEW

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is brilliant. Context. I overdosed on Hallmark. People I watched so many Xmas movies I now get a twitch when someone mentions a tree lighting ceremony or throws flour playfully.

This project brings the aww factor without ever straying into schmaltz. Plus the cast are all infinitely better than a lot of the performances in the last few years of Netflix Xmas movies

This is the best example of how to take vertical components, and create something wonderful. Yes credulity is stretched with the plane crash but CGI and special effects are judiciously used rather than the terrible green screens I have been seeing recently.

The script and cast are all superb

@mariah_moss has found another gear this year - give her better scripts and wow. You instantly feel Joy's hurt, love for her mom and more

And we all know @leif.offerdahl is a star presence, he just has that something extra that makes him a must watch on screen. Natural easy charm, but he can also act, again you feel what Leo feels

And they get actual couple time - playing cards and messing around on the grass. It feels real for once! Hallelujah. This is the standard people.

@sophielouiserankin is officially an icon, does the best screams ever and I demand is in a gazillion more Verticals

Especially paired with @colinsutherland.tv who is the perfect foil, from his panic about the bugs to genuine regret at never truly seeing Joy at the ball.

And the script is brilliant - super lines like 'not billionaires trying to buy happiness' and the detail that Darrell runs 'Clovis Floor and Carpets'.

I was nostalgic for a good auction, and this is one of the best with the fire and slow mo ring

The stakes are just right, Bianca is dreadful but not too much, and to be fair to her I can see why she has a grudge after that haircut. The real big bad is genius (about time one of these tries to steal the company, they do all the work anyway)

All credit to @can__ozen who has made 2 of the best verticals this year with this & The Summer I Turned Bad - constantly pushing the genre forwards by improving quality in all areas.

💖 Top swoonworthy moment:

There is such a warm and natural chemistry between the leads - which means if you want sizzling chemistry you get it, but you also get super performances and a real connection - totally believe Joy and Leo are deeply in love and will last.

🦹🏼‍♂️ Top villain award:

I adore Bianca and Darrell, so much fun seeing vertical villains in different situations, such as the plane crash. Of course Bianca ‘doesn’t do emergencies’. Very much enjoyed her howls, and elbowing Darrell to do something. Plus the real villain is perfect - of course the xxx would finally rebel. They have been put upon too long!

😂 Comedy gold:

The double act of Sophie Louise Rankin and Colin Sutherland is the best new thing in verticals since sliced bread. That’s how you make an entry folks, screaming on a hospital trolley because your hair got stuck in his zipper.

🎺 Unsung hero:

Sophie Louise Rankin deserves all the awards for services to film and comedy for taking that fire extinguisher. Because it is hilarious. Also how does Mariah Moss manage to style out egg on her face and look that good? Queens both.
