REVIEW
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This is one of my favourite verts from last year, and I have been saving it as a treat to rewatch and review. It is even better than I remembered.
And it is all because of perfect performances and a super story that develops all the characters, even Philip's assistant Alan gets his moment.
I think Brittany Marsicek may be one of my fave vert actresses because I know I am SAFE. I know that her projects won't have too much violence or sex, when they are there it is to serve the story rather than elicit shock for marketing purposes.
She is perfect as Chloe, standing up to Philip as soon as she finds out about his affairs, in a quiet determined manner rather than bringing the drama. She has to show us why Vernon falls in love with her instantly (the food helps) and ensure she never becomes that dowdy nobody Philip makes her out to be.
Paul Addison does the impossible... he makes a character called Vernon, VERNON, swoonworthy. My love for Gilbert Blythe means I am always a fan of the long term crush on the sidelines, and this is so well done. He is totally respectful always, is the biggest confidence boost for Chloe and I have a massive crush on this character. Vernon is in my top 10 literary/onscreen crushes. Because he isn't that obvious brooding male lead but instead a thoroughly nice guy, and that is who my husband is (also a CEO but doesn't have the billions 😆).
Then you have an amazing supporting cast.
Myles Clohessy does such a good job as Philip that I took a long time to accept him as a male lead because I hated this character so much!
Lawson Greyson on top form as Priscilla, who I can't quite work out why Vernon keeps around, but has great fun being rude about the food and wearing disguises.
I also loved the sous chef Kaius Harrison who breaks when confronted and turns himself in - everyone gets a complete storyline.
It's just wonderful.
💖 Top swoonworthy moment:
I love Vernon so much - he loves Chloe from the first, tries to do the right thing by stepping aside, and then proceeds to be the exact opposite of Philip in every way, encouraging her to have a career, refusing to let her shut him out, and generally being one of the most swoonworthy male leads ever. And I adore that Chloe becomes his partner, and helps him take on Philip at the end.
🦹🏼♂️ Top villain award:
Philip is the perfect embodiment of a gas-lighting, narcissistic ex-husband who blusters and bullies everyone around him. Because this is so well written, rather than resorting to slaps he tries to win out by ruining Vernon’s company. Which makes the ending even sweeter, finding all the women he has assaulted and then the car chase.
😂 Comedy gold:
Priscilla’s disguises which involve the classic silk headscarf and sunglasses combo. Plus her panicked ‘I’ll have to flee the country!’ - too late dear!
🎺 Unsung hero:
Adam who finally gets to tell Philip he can’t keep throwing things on the floor and breaking them, that he will have to pay, the board and have ousted him and then gives him the finger.
