REVIEW
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I think we have established if BODYGUARD is in the title I will watch. But this rather brilliant vert isn't a bodyguard romance at all, instead it is more about the found family that happens when Amanda meets Lilly and Ethan.
Much more relevant is Ethan's past as a boxer, and how he ends up in the ring again despite promising daughter Lilly he would give it up.
This is so so so good.
I love Amanda, when she stands up for Lilly at school, that she is the one with the money, and she must be the best dressed vert character, every outfit is gorgeous. Quincey Leigh is amazing, you see the colour drain from her face when she realises about the insurance. I can't write eloquently enough, just know she is really really good.
Grace Ella is a find as Lilly. OMG she is so good, and even better gets a punch the air moment at the end when we think Ethan is going to fight again. Total superstar.
And then Evan Wick who I have seen in a few things. This is the project that should make him go stellar.
He has the physicality for all the boxing, and can do swoonworthy male lead. But there is so much more here, his relationship with Lilly, a moment where he crinkles his nose when talking to her at their apartment, his panic and controlled fury when Amanda loses Lilly, the winks to reassure the ladies in his life it will be ok. Amazing performance.
Also shout out to Victor (Andrew Vogel) - he channels corporate creep who gets increasingly desperate. Also the hypocrisy of the board that it is never suggested he should have a family.
Please go and watch this, it is one of the best found family verts, you will be rooting for everyone to get together, and it has lots of original ideas.
💖 Top swoonworthy moment:
If you watch this and are not totally in love with the character of Ethan and Evan Wick’s portrayal of him, then you are a stronger person that me. And there is a proper issue to overcome - Amanda unwittingly signing off on the insurance denial. Proper heartbreak here, which means when they do get together it is so much more satisfying.
🦹🏼♂️ Top villain award:
Victor has to be one of the worst villains seen in a vertical, because he actually legally steals Lilly from Ethan. It is a masterstroke to have a villain do something this heinous and clever, and not just kidnapping etc (though Victor does this as well).
😂 Comedy gold:
It’s not a comedy piece, but did enjoy that Lilly says ‘ew’ everytime Amanda and Ethan get close. Also excellent new take on a shower scene, with Ethan wandering sleepily into the same shower 😆
🎺 Unsung hero:
Lilly is brilliant all the way through, she builds the bond with Amanda, calls out her dad, and holds her own against Victor. Standing ovation for young actress Grace Ella. Phenomenal performance.
