REVIEW
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Damn this is good.
How to make a road trip movie.
How to make a rom com.
How to do a second chance romance / enemies to lovers.
The story is great but this is all about @meglevv as Olivis who is so good you will become obsessed. She is that frustration many of us have had with the patriarchy or a system that seems stacked against us. She is cute and likeable and funny and warm and my word a star is born here.
Insanely relatable and brilliant
Which gives @beauminniear a tough job working with someone with that star wattage but he balances it well. Joe could be quite unlikeable, but he ensures the character stays sympathetic especially as he takes ownership for his mistakes, and refuses to let Olivia let him off.
All the surrounding performances are great, especially loved the 3 airport car rental staff and Olivia's BFF
Also kudos to the team for making a road trip look good, no dodgy background fx
A few niggles, the background music on some episodes it too loud and almost drowns out the dialogue
And I wish we had a tiny bit more explanation of why Joe forgot Olivia from.senior year
But overall this is such an exciting project from @rommioriginals @ali_rosen @chellstephen and @steadfast.productions
Made in New York, combining book tok with verticals, this is a fab new direction, which best of all is available to watch for free on Instagram, with news eps added daily
(Note I had an advance screener to watch whole thing.)
💖 Top swoonworthy moment:
How to do a Just One Bad scene. No notes. Also nice nod to Say Anything for the oldies like me at the end.
🦹🏼♂️ Top villain award:
Olivia’s awful co worker Craig who is condescending, infuriating, rude and incompetent. In just a very brief appearance on screen.
😂 Comedy gold:
Everything Meg Levine does. A star is born. Her timing is spot on. Her slowly building rage at Joe and his obliviousness, her reactions, micro expressions. So good.
🎺 Unsung hero:
This is based on a story by romance novelist Ali Rosen, who also wrote the rage room monologue - episode 14. She speaks for us all. Epic. Job done. This is the vertical equivalent of the Barbie monologue.
