⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is a lovely sweet story that chugs along as a solid 4 star for me until the last 10 episodes when it suddenly shifts gears with the arrival of @mmactuj as Hayley, one of the most interesting characters in Verticals.

The most important thing about this vertical is it breaks convention. It is a step away from the formula that the top apps adhere to - high stakes, conflict, shocking moments. Once you know the formula you spot it everywhere - yes the setting may change from Greek Gods to Fae to Billionaires but the essence is the same

This moves away from that and is closer in tone to the long form Korean & Chinese dramas that I originally fell in love with.

We have time here, things aren't hurried. It just feels softer. Pauline is a doctor. William intervenes when his family misbehaves. All a bit revolutionary for a vertical

@chena_verony and @noahfearnleyy are great at Pauline and William given they don't have a lot to work with. The script doesn't tell us much about who they are or why they connect until the very end, that was the frustration for me

But this is all resolved when Hayley arrives - suddenly we are in a can't look away drama as we realise Hayley is trying to save her sister and deal with dad @buzz_leer

Honestly has to be one of the best ever cameo / brief performances in a vertical, @mmactuj is phenomenal. Her emotional but controlled delivery when taking on her dad, then talking with Pauline whilst smoking that cigarette outside. So good

@maureenkedes similarly breaks your heart just with her body language and expressions

@juliaklinestiver gets a more interesting dynamic to play with in Chloe, subtly manipulating naive Nina @hannmarshh

We have a few standard Verticals moments....Gabrielle and Eric and their shenanigans - was a slight moment of horror I thought we were going to go down banquet hall identity arguments but thankfully we swerve that

And instead have a really encouraging vertical that is crucially delivering numbers and will hopefully be seen as a hit

Because if it is we all get a lot more stories like this and that is a win for everyone

💖 Top swoonworthy moment:

There is a lot of kissing. A LOT. And Pauline and William are very nice and sweet. But I didn't know anything about them or why them fell in love until the very last few epsiodes. The reveal about why William fell for Pauline is super, but we only find out in the last minute of the film. Up until then I didn't get it - and honestly thought he had more chemistry with Hayley.

🦹🏼‍♂️ Top villain award:

It's actually great casting to have twinkly eyed Buzz Leer play Pauline and Hayley's domineering dad. It makes it more shocking. We never actually see anything - it is all sold by Helen's reactions. (Maureen Kedes)

😂 Comedy gold:

I have never seen so many sets of silk pyjamas on screen. This should have been sponsored by a brand like Lunya or Eberjey. Everyone could have got free pyjamas out of this.

🎺 Unsung hero:

Hann Marsh nails slightly bratty younger sister Nina, who just wants to protect her brother. But it has to be Molly Anderson as Hayley who kicks this film into another gear from the moment she arrives. One of the most powerful, interesting and layered characters I have ever seen in a vertical. It's mesmerising.
