REVIEW
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
5 days. That's how long @watchcandyjar take to make a movie
And this is superb - we have a background of cage fighting here and the action scenes are visceral, brutal and as a viewer you are placed right in the centre of the action.
But in fact my favourite thing is that Kenzie is who she is @oliviarrosewilliams doesn't have to compromise or shrink to play the female lead. Kenzie is always clear on what she wants and what her boundaries are. She has a princess pink bedroom but can hold her own with anyone. Honestly one of my fave female characters in a vertical.
And @thecarterharvey is another great CJ find. Again the character is so well drawn, he is vulnerable and thoughtful (getting Kenzie's necklace back), but also fearless and uncompromising in the cage.
Basically neither character slips into cliche and it is so refreshing to watch
Add in @haulstonmann as the dangerous Patrick, who takes horrible advantage of the no rules, and a brief appearance by @cameronsomers as horrible Tristan and you have a brilliant vertical
This is a mega achievement
Candyjar have had a few famous name projects recently, that have brought attention, but both missed the mark a bit story wise.
Not here. This is tight, clever, romantic, powerful and very very very good. It looks cinematic, the music choices fit - from rock music to the eerie tension of the fights. Just everything is put together perfectly.
Please don't stop making these
Don't get too distracted by star power
Because this is the very best work that you do and as viewers we need you to keep making this
Standing ovation for everyone including @barrjessie the director.
💖 Top swoonworthy moment:
It's so well done - because we never drop into overdone cliches - yes Kenzie is privileged, but she isn't spoilt, and is beyond generous to Clay with no strings. And Clay has his challenges, but doesn't slip into tortured bad boy. Which means the romance feels much more genuine, and has more meaning. Superb.
🦹🏼♂️ Top villain award:
Haulston Mann is brilliant as Patrick – raw and vicious, and delivers in all the fight scenes.
😂 Comedy gold:
The whole sequence with Clay hidden under the dining room table is hilarious.
🎺 Unsung hero:
Kenzie's dad is thankfully a good guy and not the cliche father. But really it is Kenzie – so refreshing seeing such a strong female lead in a vertical, even from Candyjar. Not a 'nerd' or 'shy girl' - great work everyone.
