When their biggest and most deranged superfan kidnaps the All-American Rejects, the band is forced into a bizarre basement torture chamber with one strict demand: finish their new album, and box. Enduring fake coffee, shock collars, and questionable makeovers, Tyson, Nick, Chris, and Mike must write their way out before her birthday party becomes their final gig.

⭐⭐⭐

Do not watch this stone cold sober at 8am in the morning.

That was my first mistake.

This is not the time to watch this mini film. You will get more out of it and find it funnier if you watch it late at night, possibly after a drink or a few - another movie this stands for is The Blues Brothers

You also can't approach it as a normal narrative film, that just isn't there. It is more of an extended music video or comedy short. A closer comparison is probably something like The Yellow Submarine by the Beatles, you have to go with the trip

And there are lots of things that work here, @therejects are naturals on camera, sell every scene they are in, and could quite happily watch them in more caper style movies where the band overcomes challenges or solves mysteries.

And some of the comedy stuff lands and is laugh out loud funny

There are also misses - the stunt celebrity cameos rely on you knowing who these people are. I don't know Ryan Serhant or Chris Taylor so lost on me.

@erictaylorguilmette is to be commended for being so willing to poke fun at himself, but the Josh character seemed to be in a different story and didn't quite mesh with the rest. Possibly because he actually has barely any scenes with Danica @anna_lore

@anna_lore gets to go full cuckoo as Danica and there are lots of cameos at the end of vertical stars for the vertical viewers

It's a good try at something new, that lands with mixed success

I do find it interesting that I think 2 of the weaker recent @watchcandyjar projects are ones with famous names - in both a slight concern that the dazzle of the star power slightly overpowers the editor / story / costars and the overall project ends up feeling a bit lopsided

From what I can tell with other reviews I am in the minority with my views on this, looks like loads of people love it.

And that's great, really hope it finds its audience, as positive to see something new and different

I just hope that this trend of big name casting doesn't overpower Verticals and lose sight of why audiences have connected with them.

💖 Top swoonworthy moment:

Um none - and really didn't need to see those tongues when Danica kisses poor Tyson.

🦹🏼‍♂️ Top villain award:

Well Danica - the Misery style superfan complete with sledgehammer. The set up is great – fan loses patience waiting for band to come out with new material. And any scene with The Muscle in is super - we just run out of steam a bit at the end, as the vampire stuff comes out of nowhere, and only appears to be there because Catherine Hardwicke turned up for a cameo.

😂 Comedy gold:

There are some very funny bits - the torture of bad coffee, Muscle working for Danica because she pays healthcare, Tyson trying to remember his lessons from therapy when talking to his bandmates Also some misses - the tentpole, the cat - perhaps natural in a sketch like show, not everything is going to land for every viewer.

🎺 Unsung hero:

The All American Rejects - because they come out of this really well, you get a taste of the music, everyone is a natural on screen, you get the band camraderie, they can laugh at themselves. I became a fan after watching this.
