REVIEW
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
What happens if you take a simple story, tell it well and let the characters have actual conversations? This.
The actual story is pretty slight, there are not twists or big reveals. Instead it is all about telling this story well. Finally we have a realistic reaction to being told you are a father, and the complicated conversation that follows.
It is all about the leads, because you have to be invested in their relationship.
Hanna Kemp is superb as self assured Maya, who then struggles once the feelings become big and real. It is very well done, you can see the moment she shuts down, as this is too big and too scary. She also has an amazing moment where Jace stops them going further at the bar, and just captures the hurt on her face as she turns away.
And Giovanni Deval is wonderful as the kind and caring Jace. Thankfully it never becomes an icky power play thing despite Jace being Maya's senior, instead he can be found helping her study, and quizzing her with flashcards. My favourite moment is when he finds out about Maisie, and the fact you can see how much impact the news has without there being massive gestures, you can see the internal processing.
And then we get a realistic conversation, with both sides making their point, and then 2 grown ups working out what to do. A lesson to all the Breaking The Ice variations.
If you want chemistry this delivers plenty but it never becomes too much, and the real focus of the story is Maya learning to let Jace into her life.
Plus we have Liz (Mary Foster) who is fast becoming one of my favourite actresses because she is epic in everything she does.
This isn't going to change the world, but is a perfect example of a good love story well told, and credit to everyone involved.
💖 Top swoonworthy moment:
We have the can’t keep your hands off each other phase. But it is really all about Maya learning to trust Jace and let him help. Those scenes are beautifully done, as is the scene where Jace finds out about Maisie. Finally we have a real reaction and conversation about this frequent vertical plot point.
🦹🏼♂️ Top villain award:
There is no villain here - just circumstances, and then the fear of opening yourself up to love and the risk of getting hurt.
😂 Comedy gold:
All provided by bestie Liz - in particular spelling out rude words in front of Maisie. That will come back to bite you - kids are clever and I can guarantee Maisie is running around daycare spelling out F * U * C ...
🎺 Unsung hero:
The hospital co-workers, because we ever go down the route of them being jealous of Maya or that becoming a plot point. Hooray for unhinged co-workers.
