REVIEW
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Firstly it is always fascinating as a Brit that movies can be made about someone before the trial takes place... as this vert starts off very heavily inspired by the Luigi Mangione case. You would never be allowed to do that here in case it impacted the outcome.
And the speed of vert production means they can get in before the Lifetime movie and eventual Oscar bait biopic.
It's an eye catching opening and original take for this story, which is a classic vert taking revenge on a terrible husband, and then some banquet hall style scenes in the latter half. It works so well because of the cast.
Alexandria Watts is the epitome of patience, and a woman who lost herself in marriage but is finding her identity again. I know these women. And she nails it.
Jordan Frank is great as the gentle Will, a total green flag who supports Elly, and is always there patiently on the sidelines.
Richmond Keeling has a super brief cameo as the charismatic Luis.
But it is all about the comedy duo of Marie Elizabeth DeWitt and Ben Whalen.
Now most of us are fed up of the banquet hall identity sagas. It works here because it zips along, and rather than being vicious, George and Barbara lean into the comedy.
I don't know what Hair and Make Up did to Marie's lips but it works, she is permanently sulky and outraged.
And Ben Whalen is just one twitch away from a nervous breakdown throughout the whole thing.
He is hysterical, every facial expression, the pursed lips, the outrage and stupidity. It is so funny and that is what kept me watching, the antics of Barbara and George. Just the way she hangs off his arm, talks him up, the way they gang up on Elly.
I honestly don't know how everyone else kept a straight face when they were in full flow.
Very proud of Barbara at the end btw. Well done.
So yes this is a fun take on a well worn story and I think the eye catching beginning works as Will and Elly deal with skeezy big pharma executive David Moskowitz.
There is a bit of a message here about that, and not dimming your light for others which many of us do.
💖 Top swoonworthy moment:
Lovely Will who falls in love with Elly because she helped him when no one else would 3 years ago, and has quietly loved her from afar. The perfect partner who lets Elly shine, always believes in her, never presses his suit when she isn’t ready, and willing & able to punch George when needed. I just got a bit obsessed with his hair and really wanted to tidy it up.
🦹🏼♂️ Top villain award:
It is all about dreadful ex husband George and his new paramour, Barbara. They are a delightfully awesome twosome and it works because both play it big and lean into the comedy. They are absolutely hilarious.
😂 Comedy gold:
Ben Whalen is a comedy genius. So many things:
“You must be a chicken crossing the road because you're a f*cking joke”
“Nobody cares about your love story”
Checking Will’s money to see if it is genuine and then casually pocketing a wad
Every time he purses his lips, pulls a face and looks indignant
That spin into the wall and fall when Will punches him outside the court
🎺 Unsung hero:
Danny Arroyo as Elly’s deputy and the much needed voice of reason and authority near the end.
