REVIEW
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
And we are back in the game people because this is absolutely brilliant, so funny, fresh and original.
It is stylized, and feels like a K:Drama style comedy which I love. Plus the addition of the comic book graphics works so well.
So good seeing Faith Orta and Mark Vega back together in a comedy after Found You Heart Thief, and I think this is even better.
I didn't think anything could beat Mark Vega vs balloons but it turns out Mark vs the Paris merchandise can.
Faith Orta is so good at Nadia, she gets more to do here, the whole witch thing is hysterical, her excitement at meeting Paris, trying to push the immovable object that is Benjamin Sparrow out of her apartment. Genius.
Someone is determinedly putting Mark Vega in every mad outfit they can think of but guess what, he can pull off a wedding dress. Again the physical comedy, and screams in reaction to bugs is hysterical.
But there is so much more. Nadia is strong and fights back against the gang, but Ben also gets plenty of chances to do heroic rescues and take out Jimmy Pierce with a unique 1 -2 combo of ice cream and punch.
And we actually see them fall in love, from Nadia defending Ben online, to Ben visiting her granny, to them messing about on the pitch together.
And for a comedy there is an admirable ability to change tone, the hurt when Ben says she has let him down, and the last 10 episodes. Proper heartbreak there for each character. And yes Mark Vega made me cry here. Best actor in the space.
Mair Mulroney is insanely good here. Like genius. Everything, the way she delivers lines, moves her face, the physicality. And there is a moment in Ep 55 when Ben rejects her. A moment of total pain, you see how hurt she is for a second before it turns to rage. One of the best things I have ever seen.
Callahan Teceno is great as Paris, love the fights with Ben, and the slow reveal of what a skeezeball he is.
This is proof that you can tell an amazing love story, deliver brilliant comedy, and be original all in one vertical.
It is so so so good.
Also if someone made those Mark Vega standees to sell they would make a fortune.
P.S. 1 quibble, hated the sound at the end of each episode.
💖 Top swoonworthy moment:
So may but I have to pick a few:
We have a one arm carry people
Benjamin putting slippers on Nadia’s feet
When she is feigning sleep walking
Encouraging Nadia to apply to college
Several heroic rescues of each other
All the couple scenes…
🦹🏼♂️ Top villain award:
Poor Nadia, we soon realise her idol Paris doesn’t live up to her image of him. But the real piece of work and utter icon here is Susan played by Mair Mulroney. So good because she is layered, she is trying to rescue Benjamin’s career. And when she turns, a doll with a knife in it is frankly terrifying and shows that you don’t need slaps for shock factor.
😂 Comedy gold:
SO MUCH
Nadia doodling on Benjamin’s standee
Benjamin taking out the standee of Paris, and then the whole bookcase
Every reaction to a bug
Benjamin disguised with a scarf
Nadia’s whole ‘witch’ performance on that date
The date being introduced with on screen as ‘bald man in a suit’
Attack of the ice cream
Staving off a water throw with an umbrella
“I took karate. I knocked out a kangaroo in Australia.”
“Can you get your giant pecs out of my face?” - “You mean Louie and Alexander”
🎺 Unsung hero:
I would like to dedicate this to the bugs.
Poor Benjamin, all that money and he can’t get a decent fumigator to clear out his house.
And the fear of the bugs is a brilliant plot point as I think it causes at least 2 accidental kisses.
So hurrah for the bugs - in particular the one that sacrificed its life on screen when Nadia squishes it with her hand.
