Thank you so much to everyone who messaged me telling me to watch this, you were right! Hooray for AVOMEDIA!
This is loads of fun, it is a classic vert story but some sassy writing, humour and great performances make it stand out.
Firstly I demand more of Rachel Coopes on our screens. She is soooo good, you know you are in the hands of a pro with her reaction shots, delivery and the way her face does turn pale in that scene. She is just cool and awesome and I want to be her when I grow up.
And then Kenny Resch is wonderful as Leo. I try to give insightful commentary here but I keep getting stuck on the fact he has kind eyes, and is adorable with Evelyn all the way through - cute grins and watching proudly at the culinary gala. So nice watching a male lead who is green flag but isn't alpha male, and instead allowed to play the character more softly.
And then we have the demonic Jennifer who undoes all precious good work for this name. Emma Dusenbury has a way of narrowing and flashing her eyes which is frankly terrifying and I rather love her for it, and some of the lines Evelyn has when dealing with her.
Plus we have the amazing Nick (Jack Snyder) who steals the show every time he is on screen.
It's all so much fun, it did lose a bit of pace with all the cooking bits, but well worth a watch.
💖 Top swoonworthy moment:
This is not an insightful analysis but Leo / Kenny Resch has kind eyes. And Leo is actually gentle, shy and always trying to do the right thing. Basically he is lovely, Evelyn is fabulous and together they are perfect.
🦹🏼♂️ Top villain award:
Epic poems should be written about Jennifer (Emma Dusenbury) with her chemical warfare perfume, and going full psychotic multiple times including with the knife and at the hospital. Maybe Evelyn is on to something, and she just needs to pick a new hobby like knitting.
😂 Comedy gold:
One of the greatest scenes ever in a Vert. When Nick comes to unlock the handcuffs and brings - the lawyer, the locksmith, the locksmith’s mentor, and the guy just here for the spectacle. Featuring the very wonderful Michael Sullivan, who brightens my days on Instagram.
🎺 Unsung hero:
Leo’s assistant Nick who is a hoot, in particular when he loses his Christmas bonus at the end and our parting shot is him fretting about the 6 cats who will now not be getting cap nip, a new cat tree or tuna for Christmas.
