REVIEW
⭐⭐⭐⭐
I think the stars of this will be ok with my saying this is such a load of tosh. It's madness. BUT I LOVE IT.
And I think we get into interesting conversation about what makes art... yes this isn't Shakespeare. But it provided so much entertainment, made me grin, laugh, had some big moments and I shouted at the WTF ending. And I really enjoyed it all.
This is old school verts... I was looking for an OG Felix Merback as it is his birthday today. I also need to confess that I set up his fan page teamfelixmerback and have posted exactly nothing. So I have let the poor man down.
Which is very unfair as he is awesome in this. He gets to channel Begbie and do a Glasgow Kiss. He is a hoot when going up against Jamie (David Warden). He lights up with boyish enthusiasm when talking to the witch and pledging everything for Phoebe.
I love this about verts. Take a totally mad story but lean into it and deliver your very best. And everyone does that.
Sophia Delucchi actually gets a totally bad ass character, love the transformation she has, and how she pulls apart everyone else in the room with her controlled fury. In fact Phoebe is so strong she ends up slightly trampling everyone around her, in particular poor Jamie.
I adore Jamie. From the moment he blurts out ‘I love you’ early on. We all know he doesn't have a chance but you still root for him.
And then we have Grace Swanson in a small role as Chapelle, and because this is an older version rather than being 1 note, her character actually evolves and comes to grudgingly respect Phoebe.
Poor Damian trusts all the wrong people.
…and then Richmond Keeling turns up with a moustache which he essentially twirls, and the stick. We all need to talk about the magic stick... with the random skull stuck on top and crazy craft project which can actually take people's wolves.
It's all crazy - Asta makes one of the most swoonworthy big gestures / sacrfices for love, Howard (Mark Chinnery) seems to get forgiven for his dastardly deeds, and then we have the ending.
WHAT THE HECK WAS THAT. Did everyone run out of money to make more? Is a sequel planned? Theories needed.
💖 Top swoonworthy moment:
We think Asta has betrayed Phoebe, so it is a great moment when we find out what he has actually done for Phoebe, and how much he has sacrificed. Poor Asta, I do think he loves Phoebe more than she loves him, as she is quick to cut him off time and again.
🦹🏼♂️ Top villain award:
Alpha Howard causes a lot of the problems, Damian is shortsighted - but it is all about Corentin, and the mad stick thing that can remove wolves. Best macguffin ever - and I want to know who got to keep that stick afterwards.
😂 Comedy gold:
Some killer lines:
“I love blue” “I love you” - oh Jamie
“I don’t hunt rabbits with a cannon”
And the whole thing about why Gilt was in Asta’s room.
🎺 Unsung hero:
Gilt! Phoebe really does trample all over your feelings.
And don’t get me started on poor Jamie. Another one who is used by Phoebe and has his heart trampled. Repeatedly.
