REVIEW
⭐⭐⭐⭐
This is great fun and zips along merrily.
It works because everyone leans into the absurdities, such as Nathan puts on 'special glasses' which means no one can recognise him, and Gavin and Rebecca are OTT.
In fact Gavin played by Mark Pontarelli and Rebecca played by Mary Foster are so good that they kind of steal the show.
I want to watch more maniacal laughs, (Mark Pontarelli is now the official king of this), the pair of them squabbling at that doorway, the moments when they inevitably turn on each other, and all those polls that I am assuming Gavin rigged.
And hooray for Dorothy Mannine getting to play the awesome beat friend rather than villain, and getting her own romance. Brilliant!
There are some fresh ideas here, and great visual gags - cue the very obvious fake knives Rebecca has and the cleaner.
I actually feel a bit for the leads as the script gives them less to do, I think they needed in on all the comedy.
Tiffany Alvord is great, sells Maya as someone who is great at her job and we discover has a lovely singing voice.
I spent most of the vertical trying to decide who Fabian Arnold reminded me of and randomly landed on Gary Lineker. I do wish the script had given him more physical comedy to do, rushing around more switching between roles.
In fact I wish this for both of the leads, let them in on the fun! Because with a little more crazy I think this would have been 5 star.
It's a good fun watch, and you can catch it now on VIGLOO.
💖 Top swoonworthy moment:
I didn’t feel the connection between Maya and Nathan for most of the show, but the karaoke save was perhaps the best on screen karaoke cuteness since High School Musical. I did appreciate Maya reasoning Nathan can’t be good if he went out with Rebecca, and Nathan apologising “I'm sorry that you were one of the ones that she left in her wake”. Some logic in Vertland.
🦹🏼♂️ Top villain award:
Rebecca and Gavin are sooo much fun. We have the brilliant mcguffin of the black key. We have evil laughs, matching outfits in red, excellent bickering, the 51% votes and the delivery of iconic lines like “Hey I'm trying to blackmail you here”.
😂 Comedy gold:
I think it was the right call to lean into the nonsense of the glasses, and that they scrambled people’s visual cortex. Bravo for having the balls to run with that 😆.
🎺 Unsung hero:
All hail the cleaner who takes out knife wielding Rebecca and gets to say “No one is spilling fresh blood on my clean floors”.
And a shout out for Mrs Palmer on the reception happily engrossed in her kindle.
