REVIEW
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
It's been too long since I watched something from AMO Pictures - add that this is set against the backdrop of Formula 1 and I am there (big F1 fan here). And this is super. I love that they don't go with the usual story for F1 set romances, driver vs driver. The fact it is about the team owner makes the power dynamics more interesting.
All the F1 shots and stunts and handled really well, mix of real action and AI SFX. It works. You get the gist of what is happening, and the shots where Christopher saves his son, and has a crash are heart stopping.
But this is really all about the emotion and the connection between Sophie and Christopher. Tatiana Zlova is always superb, and this role suits her perfectly, the one who is having to make the big decisions in the relationship, and willing to accept the fate written for her. It means when she finally lets her guard down it is more dramatic, in particular the hospital scene where she finally confesses. And Nazar Grabar shows why he was a deserved nominee for Vertical Drama Love Fan Awards Male Legend. Not just star power, but has the physicality to convince you he is a top athlete, but then breaks your heart in the scene with his father. Those tears from his father as he is locked in to his disease, one of the most powerful scenes I have seen in verticals.
And Oleksii Yaravenko is super as a sinister version of a Toto Wolff. He turns the family portrait sitting into the stuff of nightmares, and the scene where he reveals he does know about Sophie and Tom, it's so good. This really is a brilliant example of how if you put time and effort into the script you can tell a grown up story, that to be honest I enjoyed more than the Brad Pitt F1 film. Yep you can't replicate the racing shots and stunts, but this had a more compelling story, and gripping performances.
I really wish more creatives in America would look at what AMO are making in the Ukraine. The disconnect frustrates me sometimes. Surely we all want to learn from each other, and how to keep pushing the genre forward. As ever AMO are ambitious, original, and the Ukrainian productions in particular are something to be studied.
💖 Top swoonworthy moment:
Nobody does passionate bedroom scenes better than the Ukrainians. Because they put the emotion in, it isn't just the posing of a lot of verticals made in America. The intimacy scenes drive the story forward, and make sense for the characters. And when Sophie & Chris finally get back together it is explosive.
🦹🏼♂️ Top villain award:
You aren't quite sure at the beginning how much an issue Tom will be - and then we have the terrifying scene where the 'come to daddy' takes on an entirely new meaning. This scene is a masterclass in how to be intimidating and threatening without using any insults or visible violence.
😂 Comedy gold:
None - but I did rather enjoy that Tom (Oleksii Yaravenko) looks a little like Formula 1 boss Toto Wolff - who has now gone to the dark side. Also the nod to Valentino Rossi with Christopher's surname.
🎺 Unsung hero:
The poor mechanic who walks in after the Tom - Christopher confrontation, and can tell something has happened, doesn't want to know, and would just like the race to happen please.
