REVIEW
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
We are in new territory with verticals now. Thank you to everyone who has battled to get better scripts out there and made.
Because the result is moments of perfection like this. This makes my Chinese drama-loving heart so happy, as it perfectly captures the love story that CDramas (and Jane Austen) do so well, a sunshine female lead and a reserved male lead.
It is a classic: she falls first, he falls harder. It is all handled perfectly as Jane gets hurt one too many times and pushes Henry away, who then realizes what he has lost.
Kimm Dizdari is joyous as Jane, portraying her optimism but adding layers so we also see she is hurt underneath by all the gossip, is deeply devoted to Henry and never becomes annoying (believe me this happens a lot with lesser actresses in C Dramas)
Alexander Handy has the subtlety-named Mr Darcy role but makes it his own as he slowly unfurls and softens around Jane. Also very clever use of wardrobe as Henry starts in doctor's clothes, but when he is the hero stopping that slap, he is finally in a leather jacket, and it was a whole moment.
These 2 need to be superstars. Can we make that happen now?
I loved that they channel some of the performances of Shen Yue and Hu Yitian from my all-time favourite A Love So Beautiful, even though I suspect both have never seen it.
The rest of the cast is excellent: Leah Kirkup, Isa Martinez, Chantel Litel, Siena Cutone & Matt Dixon as Dick like his name 😆
But the real stars have to be writers, Bacon Hill Creative, Director Steph Tablizo, and everyone else involved who got this made.
Because it is a gift
And proof that verticals can be a source of high-quality storytelling, that delivers for the audience without all the nonsense that can detract
The writing, the performances, the look. All top notch.
Thank you to everyone who has fought to get us to this point
💖 Top swoonworthy moment:
This is a perfect slow-burning romance, has a stunning moment in the snow, so many gorgeous glances, and perfect timing when they choose to put Henry in a leather jacket. But it has to be the epilogue. That moment of realisation will stay with me forever.
🦹🏼♂️ Top villain award:
Lydia (Leah Kirkup) has it in for Jane throughout, but the damage is done by malicious rumours rather than slaps, and causes a huge amount of harm. Also not impressed with the dance mums behaviour in front of their kids.
😂 Comedy gold:
Poor Jane’s face when she overenthusiastically volunteers to go to the medical conference, and then realises what the topic is....
🎺 Unsung hero:
The two C’s - Clara and Chloe who both ship our main couple, and I hope get a sequel where Clara finds her happy ever after.
